The last weekend of April, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce holds their annual Daffodil Festival - a weekend of events to celebrate springtime awakening on Nantucket Island. The first occasion, a very simple affair in the 1970s, included an antique car parade in which islanders showed off their classic cars, followed by a community tailgate picnic in 'Sconset.

Now, more than three decades later, the Daffodil Festival on Nantucket includes art shows, tours, parades (including the antique car parade and tailgate picnic), exhibitions, contests, lectures, and, of course, the annual Nantucket Daffodil Flower Show. There are activities for all ages, and faithful festival-goers dress up for the occasion and participate enthusiastically! There is a Daffy Hat Contest, a Children's Parade featuring decorated bikes, strollers, wagons, and other self-propelled vehicles. The Pine Woods Morris Dancers often perform throughout the day at various locations.

The tailgate picnic in Siasconset that follows the Antique Car Parade is a favorite among everyone who attends this Nantucket festival. Picnics can be elaborately staged or simple and casual. Click here for a couple of recipes that you might want to try for your Daffodil Festival tailgate picnic.

Additional special Daffodil Festival weekend events for 2014 include a Daffodil 5k on Sunday morning, April 27, hosted by the Nantucket Triathlon Club. Daffodil Flower Show - 2014

The 40th Annual Nantucket Daffodil Flower Show and New England Regional Show—A Community Event, sponsored by the Nantucket Garden Club and approved by The American Daffodil Society, will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 2 pm to 5 pm and Sunday, April 27 from 10 am to 4:30 pm at Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm, 33 Bartlett Farm Road. On Saturday, April 26 only there will be free shuttle busses to the show from Washington Street across from The Greenhound building starting at 1:45 pm and continuing all afternoon. The last bus will return from the farm at 5:00 pm. Admission to the flower show is free, but donations will be accepted toward the Garden Club’s Daffodil Planting Fund. In preparation for this year’s special anniversary flower show, the Nantucket Garden Club with the assistance of Dave Champoux planted 15,500 bulbs along the new Hummock Pond Road bike path.

The entire Nantucket community is encouraged to enter the arrangement, horticulture and photography sections of the show. Entry cards and show schedules with detailed instructions on how to enter the show will be available at island florists and garden centers April 1. All exhibitors must bring their entries to Bartlett’s Farm either on Friday, April 25 between 3-6 pm or Saturday, April 26 between 7-9:30 am. Children and first-time exhibitors are encouraged to enter on Friday afternoon when members of the Garden Club and experts from the American Daffodil Society will be available to answer questions and help with entries. Anyone can enter the show with their daffodils. It’s fun. The American Daffodil Society has a web site where there is a database with thousands of daffodils photos, to assist all exhibitors with the identification of their entries. Last fall, the Nantucket Garden Club with the assistance of the Irene Egan and CPS middle school students classified and distributed daffodil bulbs to Nantucket students to plant and enter in the show. All youth of the island are encouraged to enter their daffodils.

The artistic theme for this year’s show is “Celebrating the 40th” chaired by Maryann Wasik and Susan Balling. View the Program for the 40th Annual Nantucket Daffodil Show here.
